Who is it for? This iron is not just for the average person looking for a steam iron. It’s for home ironing where you’d like a more high-tech appliance that works like a dream and packs away neatly when you’re done. It’s for sewers, both at home and those who attend classes and retreats. If for anyone who wants free motion without being leashed to their ironing board.
What we love! Like you even have to ask… cordless ironing will ruin conventional ironing for you, and that’s okay. When you’re done working on an item of clothing, you just place the iron in its resting station where it powers up and waits for you to reach for it again. It’s so stable in its base and feels infinitely safer than having to balance an iron on its heel repeatedly. Oh, and of course it looks so cool.
Cordless ironing’s biggest advantage is freedom of movement, but this is not the only reason the Panasonic Cordless Iron NI-L70SR is such a favorite amongst ironers, sewers and quilter alike.
It’s so easy to operate, produced excellent steam, the removable water tank is a breeze to fill, and it packs away seamlessly. Even as it cools, it can be placed into its carry case and moved away without risk of burns. It recharges on its base yet maintains heat long enough for you to steam iron or dry iron garments, quilts and more.
We also love the stainless steel simplicity of the soleplate which is easy to clean without damaging any non-stick coatings. We’ve gone into detail to give you a full and comprehensive review below. Here are all the good, great and impressively reasons why we give this steam iron a double thumbs up.

Cordless Iron Features
Convenient Portable Carry Case
One of the first things you’ll get to enjoy after unboxing your new Panasonic cordless iron will be is aqua-tinted carry case. The cover unclips by pushing down on the two white buttons on the side.
It’s not just a neat everyday storage container, its handle makes it cool and convenient for sewing classes and retreats too. Plus, the plastic is heat resistant, so when you’re done working with your iron, you don’t have to wait for it to cool. Simply pack it up and be on your way.
Stainless Steel Soleplate
The large stainless steel soleplate is gliding heaven, its smooth and effortless. The curved soleplate has 50 steam holes positioned along the surface of the ironing plate that helps spread the steam evenly over the fabric. The point tapers perfectly to allow easy maneuvering in tight spaces like collars and cuffs.
It is also a favorite among sewers and quilters where the absence of a power cord on a detailed quilt is heaven-sent.
Variable Temperature & Steam Control
The temperature control lets you change settings to suit the fabric you are working with. The steam output can also be adjusted or completely turned off if you require a dry iron for some ironing tasks.
We found that steam performance is much better when the tank is full.
There is also a steam burst feature if you need extra steam power. Vertical steaming of handing garments or drapes is such light work. The 1500 Watts of power that drives this awesome machine account for its powerful performance both in quick heating and powerful steam generation.
It heats up from cold in about 30 seconds and while ironing, depending on how cool you let the iron become, it takes about 8 seconds to recharge to full heat.
There is also a water sprayer on the front of the iron for targetting particularly challenging wrinkles and creases. Additionally, temperature settings are printed on the back of the iron if you need to double-check fabric heat requirements.
Removable Water Tank
With a single click, the detachable water tank can be removed from the iron and conveniently filled at a tap without spillage. It easily clicks back onto the iron when filled.
The 5 ounce capacity may be smaller than what you are used to but with how easy it is to top-up, its barely a factor.
Ergonomic Cordless Design & Stability
Ironing without a cord catching or snagging feels almost futuristic. Not having to awkwardly angle your ironing or re-position your ironing board based on the cord changes the experience. It’s fantastically freeing, for both left and right-handed users.
The angle at which the iron slides into its power base creates less strain on the arm and wrist. No need to rest the iron on its heel, simply slide it into its cradle and it will return to full heat in seconds for when you next need to iron or press.
The light next to your chosen heat setting will flash while it is warming up. Once the right temperature is reached, the red indicator light will stay on.
6 Foot Power Cord on Power Base
The retractable power cord does not need to be extended longer than you require. The base can be placed in a regular spot in your laundry or sewing room while neatly concealing and unneeded power cord.
If you like to have the iron and power base on your ironing board, it should be long enough to reach.
Auto-off Safety Features
The peace of mind that comes with having an iron that will automatically shut-off after 10 minutes of inactivity is priceless. With the cordless iron, the soleplate of the iron gradually starts to cool as it leaves its charging base. Should the iron fall out of its base, it is not likely to cause more than a scorch on a carpet before cooling off.
Although stats show that more house fires are caused by Christmas trees than irons in the US, we like to think its because of this safety feature that so many accidents are avoided.
1 Year Warranty
Repairs or replacements are covered by the manufacturer up to a year after your purchase if the damage to the appliance is due to a failing on their part. The Panasonic warranty and support line will be able to advise you on the quickest correction to your problem.

Our Last Word
If you’ve overlooked a more high-tech iron like the Panasonic in the past due to a generally higher price point, then look again. The Panasonic Cordless Iron NI-L70SR is excellent value for money and performs better than similar cordless products that are priced twice as high. Panasonic also offers a big brother to NI-L70SR, the Panasonic 360 Degree Freestyle. If you want to splurge a little, the NI WL600 is a bit pricier, but it’s designed with a front and back tipped soleplate for precision ironing and as the name suggests, 360 degrees of detailed ironing.
Its an incredibly comfortable and easy steam iron to work with, in fact, work is the wrong word. If feels more like play compared to conventional irons. The only drawback is that the water capacity may be smaller than what you are used to so depending on how much steaming you plan to do, you may have to fill the reservoir more often.
There are so many features to love in this steam iron design, let us know how it’s working for you!
